Way back in Nevada we road past the “Bunny Ranch.” We did not stop because it looked like it was off the highway a ways, and the road was gravel. So that was the end of that.
Several days east of Nevada my traveling compadre noticed
that the world headquarters for Blue Bunny Ice Cream was in LE Mars Iowa. I
thought WOW! We passed the first Bunny Ranch, but now we are stopping at the
next one.
We road mostly on rural roads, and then the divided rural
highway 81 north through Nebraska.
Highway 81 although a divided highway really did not have
much traffic. Most of the traffic was trucks, mostly hauling wheat, and other agricultural
items. The thing I found interesting on 81 was that it has lots of cross
traffic and a speed limit of 75, that the trucks do not obey, and go a lot
faster, but no worries for us I set the cruise control at 65, and everyone
passed us. Probably the most interesting intersection on 81 is where you have
to do U turns to connect with 20.
Crossing into Iowa at Sioux City and getting closer to the Ice
Cream capital of the world, you could see farmers with their crops loaded up to
take to the factory.
Entering LE Mars there are signs directing trucks to
shipping and receiving at the factory. We opted to check the hotel first, then
have a lunch before venturing into the heart of Blue Bunny.
We crossed under the ornate sugary arch and found parking
near the entrance.
Inside the Ice Cream Parlor is huge. There must have been at least 10 people behind the counter, and each one would take your order, then proceed down the cooler and scoop out your treat.
I had not had any ice cream in days, so when I saw this operation,
my senses went into overdrive, and I ordered a Banana Split.
This split must have had a pint of ice cream on it.
Chocolate, Strawberry, and Vanilla, sandwiched between a banana and topped with
nuts chocolate surple, whipped cream, a cherry, and one or two things that I have
no idea what they were.
I ate the whole thing and might still be recovering from ice cream overdose. But drop what you are doing a go get some Blue Bunny, especially the chocolate, it is to the moon.
