State Of Mind

Well I had to go through Redding. I did not want to, and I told my favorite niece that I would not but the way I wanted to go over highway 3 had issues

Highway 3 would have taken me through the Trinity Alps and connect with I 5 at Yreka, and I was thinking just maybe that is where Big Foot is, but the weather had other ideas.

All the weather reports I saw were calling for rain, but then it changed to snow, especially in the Trinity Alps and especially on highway 3.  It was not supposed to start until Saturday afternoon, but when I walked over to the Nugget I could see snow pretty far down on the surrounding mountains.

Still optimistic I checked the road report and discovered that 3 to 5 inches of snow was expected that the plows do not plow on Saturday, and motorists were advised to carry chains.

Not Highway 3 On Saturday

Riding in snow is really thrilling. It’s cold, its wet, and you get really hot when you are sliding across the road, thinking that if a car does not come around this corner, I will be okay because there is just enough grit right before the ditch, that I can pull out of this death spiral. You get cold again right after you gain traction and realize that you are now on the wrong side of a curvy mountain road, but hay I’m riding on snow. Get the flip out of my way.

I wasn’t riding Ohms when I did that maneuver, and since Ohms is a “Limited” and I have never found out what it cannot do. I am thinking that it cannot ride in snow. I am okay with that too.

The ride east on 299 follows the Trinity River and passes through a massive burn from a few years ago. When you see these wildfires on the tv news you don’t see the terrain, or really grasp the size. Climate change ain’t pretty.

Getting through Redding was easy, and I headed north on I 5. Not many cars and you get by the trucks as they slow way down for the uphill grades. For miles at a time on this interstate the southbound lanes are in another county, or way up the side of a mountain.

Mount Shasta was socked in with clouds, and at a gas stop I got out my rain gear and suited up, as the sky was threatening. It turned out this was a good idea as the last 30 miles of the day was in a downpour.

Not far out of Weed I saw my first trump sign off to the side of the road. Then not too much further is the hay barn declaring the State of Jefferson.

It’s good to see that wing nuttery is alive and well in this part of the world. The barn just so happens to be near another trump sign. And I should have known that the secessionist would have their own flag.

Bet TJ Would Be Proud Of That Great Seal

It took me a while to think of what their flag reminds me of and…

Could it be true that a bunch of white supremacists were tricked into modeling their flag off the logo of Mexican Beer?

Well I did pass the pickup with the sticker on the window. “I love and support president trump”

It felt good to go over the pass, enter Oregon. Everything was greener. Almost everyone was doing the speed limit, the roadside rubbish was neatly stashed in white plastic bags. A hawk was sitting on the freeway dividing fence, looking at me as I was looking at it,  and then today I saw this sticker.
