One of the main reasons to travel to Seattle was to be able
to walk around outside, and not have to experience freezing temperatures.
Well, the temperatures were not exactly Alaska freezing but
it was cold, and the sidewalks were iced to perfection.
The Space Needle
They do not have sidewalk plows here, instead they have a
guy with a plastic shovel, and he did not bother to show up for work.
They did dump tons of ice melt on all the sidewalks creating
a crusty slushy, slippery sort of walking experience.
We did fair better than people driving wheeled vehicles, and
on more that one steep hill it was exciting to watch delivery vans trying to negotiate
the grade sideways.
Ice Water
The busses chained up, so they were running on schedule, and
we did see one small city plow attempting to move slush back on to the
sidewalks.
On our first day we borrowed
ice axes from the hotel concierge and after trekking up a steep ice-covered trail,
we found Kaladi, and had espresso just a good as home.
Hotel Concierge
The Marriott Courtyard was not exactly amenity free, but it
was close. The shower worked and after picking up some good coffee beans at
Kaladi I was able to use my new press using the hotel one cup coffee maker for
hot water.
We found some excellent food in Seattle. The fisherman restaurant
on Alaska way served up the best seafood of our stay and Café Paloma served up
some of the best lamb I have had in a while. Both places as did Kaladi asked
for proof of covid vaccination if you wanted to dine in.
Luckly on our last full day in Seattle the SAM or Seattle
Art Museum was open and besides the fantastic displays of artifacts we took in an
exhibit of Imogene Cunningham, whose photographs still dazzle today.
