Capital City

We sailed out of Sydney right on schedule and headed north for the Strait of Belle Isle. Sailing through the Strait to the Labrador Sea was probably very scenic as we were close to land, but the fog was so thick one could barely see the ocean from the top deck of the ship.  On the plus side the sound of the ship’s foghorn was very relaxing, unless you were near it when it sounded.

Ever north we sailed, out across the Labrador Sea, and into the North Atlantic.  For three days we sailed towards Greenland. Through fog and choppy water. With the waves crashing and the wind howling, we knew we had to keep up our strength, and so we struggled to climb the stairs all the way to deck 15 , which is really deck 14 because, there is no deck numbered  13 because, of superstition. But we made it to the buffet line, despite adverse conditions.

Entering The Fiord

The seas were calm as we entered the fiord where the capital city of Nuuk is located, and it wasn’t long before we were boots on the ground in Greenland, or what they told us was Greenland, because Greenland is covered in ice, and Iceland is covered in green , but we saw only rock and then  all the shuttle buses that came down to the pier all had advertisements for Iceland on them. There was quite a level of confusion about our true destination, but it all became clear when we saw the road sign

We hiked into town in search of a Danish Pastry, some espresso and maybe some free wi -fi. We found the coffee, but no Danish and the only wi fi to be found was for sale for 50 kroners.
In the afternoon we had arraigned for a boat ride up the channel, in search of some wildlife and Ice Bergs.
We found the ice. Several very large pieces that are the harbingers of rising sea level.

Whales were reportedly earlier but no wildlife was to be seen by our group,  other than a few gulls.
Nuuk has the look and feel of a winter city.  The locals say they have snow for 8 months. The buildings all look quite sturdy, and mostly new.
One of the best parts of the town is all the brightly colored houses, that anchor to the rocks.
