Waterloo Station

“Terry meets Julie Waterloo Station every Friday night”

“Millions of people swarming like files round Waterloo Underground”

London Underground

Walking back from Southampton Central Train Station, and almost to our lodging at the most excellent Regent Guest house we discovered a tiny hair salon, and decided to inquire about getting cuts, as our hair has not stopped growing. The proprietor a delightful woman was busy coloring her regular customer Azaleas hair but got me right in while Azalea’s color sat on her head. When I was done Azalea got a rinse and my traveling compadre got her hair cut. We all had a nice time chatting as it turns out Azalea has been to Buckingham Palace to meet the queen several times, and both ladies gave us loads of things to see in London. Our cuts are great but didn’t stick around to see what happened to Azaleas color, that might have stayed on a bit long.

A Little Color

In the morning after a proper English breakfast, we walked up to Southampton Central train station and purchased round trip tickets to Waterloo Station, and since our timing has been impeccable it wasn’t long until we were on the train heading to London.

Just like in the Kinks song “Millions of people were swarming like files around Waterloo Station” so it took a bit to find the outside of the station. Right around the corner from the station we found what our hair dresser recommended, a double decker hop on hop off bus. We got out tickets and soon we were crawling in London traffic, seeing famous sights where famous things have taken place.

Big Ben
The bus creeped by Big Ben. The famous clock tower is undergoing a restoration that won’t be completed for several years, but I think the workers high above us enjoyed watching the traffic putz by.
The bus actually got moving after a bit, and we stayed on for a while enjoying the scenery. We got off by some restaurant’s and found a lunch of real food. I had lamb chops and my compadre had a steak. Both meals were tasty, reasonably priced and contained nothing called bubbles, squeak, tongue, or eyeballs.

We put the phone GPS to work and started to walk back towards the palace. We passed the famous English store Harrods.

We crossed over Knights Bridge and walked up to the side of the Palace to see the famous changing of the guards.

The Guards

As we walked away from the palace we could hear drums, and as we got further away we could hear marching band music. Upon closer investigation we discovered hundreds of marching soldiers, soldiers on horseback and a marching band, all fully engaged in practicing for the Queens upcoming birthday celebration.

It was quite a spectacle to witness, and the marching band played quite well, but eventually they marched back towards the palace, with the music fading off into the distance.

We stopped briefly to check the giant Ferris Wheel that is the London Eye, and then headed back to the station for the train ride back to Southampton.
